Keeping Pets Safe on Halloween

The ghosts and ghouls are getting ready, the jack-o-lanterns are carved and the candy bowl is out…it’s Halloween! Here are some simple tips for keeping your pet safe on the spookiest night of the year.

Halloween Treats

Chocolate, candy, and other Halloween treats can be dangerous (and potentially lethal!) to our furry friends. Candies that contain xylitol, an artificial sweetener, can cause some serious health issues for pets if consumed. Dark chocolate is also especially dangerous for pets to ingest, so keep the candy bowl in a safe place.

If you want to treat your pet to the flavours of the season, our Pupkin Spice Blend is a delicious (and safe!) addition to your pet’s bowl. It’s only around for a limited time, so get it before it “leafs” 😉

Halloween Decorations

A playful pet can accidentally knock over a lit jack-o-lantern and cause a fire or get burned. If you’re going to have jack-o-lanterns this Halloween, make sure they are out of reach of pets or use flamless candles.

Electrical cords and battery-operated decorations can also pose safety risks to dogs and cats. Chewing on an electrical cord can give your pet a pretty nasty (even life-threatening) shock, and batteries can cause gastrointestinal blockages if swallowed or chemical burns if chewed.

Keep Pets Indoors

While most people celebrating Halloween are just out to have fun and collect candy, some are up to more nefarious activities. Keep pets (especially black cats) indoors.

Costumes For Pets

If you’re going to dress up your pet for Halloween, test out their outfit before the big night to ensure your pet is comfortable! The costume shouldn’t restrict your pet’s movement, sight, or breathing. Pets wearing costumes should always be supervised in case anything slips or comes loose. If costumes aren’t your pet’s thing, a festive bandana or collar is a great way to add some Halloween flare to their look.

The Front Door

With lots of trick-or-treaters coming and going, Halloween night can be a stressful time for pets. Keeping pets in a separate room away from the front door with their favourite treats and toys can help reduce their stress levels and prevent any unintentional Halloween romps through the neighbourhood. In case your pet does get out, having up-to-date ID tags and a microchip can help a lost pet make it home safely.

Have a safe and happy HalloOoOoOoween from the Iron Will Raw Team!
